How Information is Collected and Maintained
2-1-1 is committed to maintaining an accurate database. The Resource Center continually updates the database and works to maintain consistency in the indexing of services, agency or program inclusion, and writing style.
The Resource Center regularly attends community meetings and events to keep informed about local activities. A variety of newspapers and newsletters are also reviewed. The Phone Center is a major source of information since it is constantly accessing the database to find resources for callers and it is often the first to find out about new programs or inaccurate information.
All agencies in the database are contacted annually to review the information that is maintained about their programs and locations. Agencies verify their information, making any corrections or updates. Agencies are relied upon to keep the Resource Center informed of any new programs or if they are getting inappropriate referrals. Agencies that do not respond to requests to update their information are deleted from the database.
How to Update Your Agency/Program Information
Contact any Resource Specialist to update your agency and program information. Call 858-300-1200 and ask to speak to someone in the Resource Center or send an email. ResourceCenter@211sandiego.org
How to Add Your Agency
To be included in the 2-1-1 San Diego Resource Database, please do the following:
- Read the Database Inclusion/Exclusion Policy
- Complete the Preliminary Agency Inclusion Application
Send completed Preliminary Agency Inclusion Application to the Resource Center via:
- Email: ResourceCenter@211sandiego.org
- Mail: PO Box 881307, San Diego, CA 92168-1307
- Fax: 858-300-1301
Prospective agencies receive notification regarding the status of their Preliminary Agency Inclusion Applications within 7-10 business days. If the Preliminary Application meets the inclusion criteria, the agency will receive an application packet, which contains a New Agency Application and a list of required documents to be submitted to 2-1-1. Once the agency’s file is complete, a standard record is created based on information provided by the agency in accordance with the Resource Database style guidelines.
Database Inclusion/Exclusion Policy
Although this policy indicates what agencies and services are eligible for inclusion in the database, 2-1-1 San Diego reserves the right to prioritize and limit entry. Inclusion does not imply endorsement and omission does not indicate disapproval.
Information provided by organizations and individual service providers that is included in the 2-1-1 San Diego database may be made available to the general public in various formats, including telephone information and referrals, an online searchable database of services, and printed materials.

Style and Indexing Guidelines
The Resource Center enters agency information into the database according to rules listed in an internal style guide. In general, information about an agency must include a description of its services and programs. There are many other rules that establish style usage such as how to write addresses, hours, administrator titles, etc. Mission statements are not used, nor are evaluative adjectives such as "innovative," "successful," etc.
The Resource Center uses the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems (www.airs.org) approved Taxonomy of Human Services, a standard indexing system used by information and referral services throughout the United States. Agencies cannot re-name service terms since the terms used are part of a national indexing system. For information about this system, please visit www.211taxonomy.org/publicfiles/view/Rights_and_Obligations.pdf
Please email ResourceCenter@211sandiego.org or call the Resource Center at 858-300-1200 with specific questions about style rules and/or indexing.
