SUMMARY:On-Farm Composting Course - San Marcos
DESCRIPTION:Composting on your farm\, ranch\, or large property is an ideal way to manage crop residues\, manures\, and other organic waste while creating a stellar soil amendment. Join us at the beautiful TERI Campus of Life in San Marcos for this three-week course. We will address the unique strategies\, challenges\, and opportunities that arise through medium-scale composting. You must pre-register to attend at solanacenter.org/events. \nThis course does not address typical residential composting or large-scale commercial composting. It is intended for those mid-sized systems that fall in between\, particularly horse ranches and small farms. \nThis course will meet Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. \nCourse Dates: \nSaturday\, February 22\nSaturday\, March 1\nSaturday\, March 8 \nIn this course\, we’ll cover the following topics: \n\nNeighbor-friendly composting best management practices\, scaled to farms\nCompost basics\, e.g. recipe considerations\, feedstocks\, and bulk density\nCompost management\, e.g. site considerations\, odor\, dust\, and rodent/vector control\nWhat is permissible on farms without permits\nComposting/water saving benefits\n\nResidents of unincorporated County of San Diego will receive preferential registration. All others will be placed on a waitlist and apprised of space available 1-2 weeks before the start of the course. All pre-registered unincorporated county residents will receive a FREE kitchen scrap caddy upon completion of the course. \nBEFORE REGISTERING\, please enter your address here to check your residency. You can select the County of San Diego Residents ticket option ONLY if your jurisdiction boundary result is “S.D. Great for all ages\, pre-K to gray! \n  \nAbout Us: \nThe San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering EXPO DAY is the largest event of its kind in Southern California. It’s a collective effort between industry\, business leaders\, government\, community organizations\, public outreach centers\, academia\, schools and school districts\, and parents. The Festival began 16 years ago primarily science and engineering-focused\, with a goal to provide experiential activities in these fields to diverse populations. The overwhelming success of the formative years of the Festival proved to be a catalyst for what the Festival would swiftly evolve into – a comprehensive San Diego County community event that celebrates the diverse cultures\, communities and populace of San Diego\, and works to inspire the curious young minds of our region to become tomorrow’s STEAM leaders.
