The 2020 Census is Here!

Every 10 years, we participate in the Census in order to have an accurate count of people living in the United States. Census data is used to distribute hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding for programs that support and benefit our communities. The Census also directly determines our Congressional seats and redistricting at all levels of government. When we have an accurate count, we secure resources that will benefit our communities for the next decade.

The 2020 Census Data Collection concluded on October 15, 2020.

How It Works

San Diegans can complete the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail as paper forms are sent to households that have not yet responded.
Download A Sample Questionnaire
The Census is a short questionnaire that you can complete in about 10 minutes. Examples of questions the Census asks are:
  • How many people are living or staying at your home as of April 1, 2020.
  • Whether the home is owned or rented.
  • About the sex of each person in your home.
  • About the age of each person in your home.
  • About the race of each person in your home.
  • About whether a person in your home is of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin.
  • About the relationship of each person in your home.

How to Take the Census

Why the Census Matters

Your answers help determine how billions of dollars are distributed across the country. These funds go toward essential resources and services for San Diego families.

Your Information is Protected By Law

The Census is safe, secure, and confidential. The Census Bureau is required by law to keep your information secure and cannot release any identifiable information about individuals, households, or businesses, even to law enforcement agencies.
Online responses are encrypted twice—first, when you hit the “submit” button and again when your response reaches their database.
