Townhall: Fighting Scams and Predatory Practices

If you’ve ever opened a bill and thought, “This doesn’t look right,” you’re not imagining it.
Across San Diego, families are paying an invisible Unfairness Tax — the costs we absorb when corporations break the rules, and no one enforces them. It shows up as:
- Junk fees and surprise charges
- Insurance denials made by algorithms, not doctors
- Scams targeting seniors, immigrants, and working families
- Tijuana River Pollution that shuts down our beaches and drives up health costs
And right now, the problem is getting worse. As federal enforcement pulls back, those costs don’t disappear — they’re quietly shifted onto families and local communities.
That’s why this town hall matters. Together, we’ll:
- Break down the most common scams and unfair practices hitting San Diegans today
- Talk about what residents are seeing in their own bills, claims, and neighborhoods
- Introduce my proposal to create a Consumer Fairness and Public Protection Unit — a local watchdog designed to take on bad actors, enforce the law, and recover money for residents when corporations break the rules
This isn’t about creating more government. It’s about enforcing the rules that already exist — so working families aren’t left paying the price when no one holds powerful interests accountable.
This event is free and open to the public. An RSVP is required so that we can plan for seating and make sure your voice is part of the conversation.
