Transitional Housing/Shelters

Transitional Housing/Shelters are programs that provide extended shelter and supportive services primarily for homeless individuals and/or families with the goal of helping them live independently and transition into permanent housing. Some programs require that the individual/family be transitioning from a short-term emergency shelter.

There are apartment complexes that offer rental prices at below-market rates. While most of these rental units have a waiting list, the waiting lists are typically much shorter than subsidized housing waiting lists.

Rental Assistance

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program provides assistance to very low-income families so they can afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing. Housing choice vouchers are administered locally by Public Housing Agencies (PHAs). The various housing authorities in the county assist low-income families with their rent, by paying a portion of the tenant’s rent directly to the landlord. The tenant is responsible for paying 30% of their adjusted monthly income towards their rent, and the housing authority will pay the remaining amount.
